Polio
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to paralysis, breathing problems, or even death. The words polio (grey) and myelon (marrow, indicating the spinal cord) come from Greek. It is the effect of poliomyelitis virus on the spinal cord that leads to paralyzing people.
